Title: A Study on the Domestic Adaptation and Dissemination of Foreign Classic Dramas: A Case Study of Dario FoAccidental Death of an Anarchist

Abstract: Taking Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist and its touring, sinicized restaging in China as its thread, the paper investigates how a foreign theatrical classic is reborn in a heterogeneous cultural context. It first unpacks Fo’s aesthetic DNA—rooted in Italian subaltern experience and wielding grotesque laughter to unmask power—arguing that this vision dovetails with China’s May-Fourth satirical legacy and the social mood of the 1990s, thus laying a value foundation for cross-cultural reception. It then zeroes in on Meng Jinghui’s 1998 adaptation: by resetting the “madman” as genuinely insane, inserting Beijing-Tianjin clapper-jargon and locally viral jokes such as “competing dads,” the original indictment of police brutality is mellowed into a playful lampoon of universal bureaucratic absurdity, retaining critical punch while fitting Chinese audience tastes and policy constraints. The study further explores how Fo’s “rebellious” dramaturgy and street-improvisatory techniques structurally inspired China’s avant-garde theatre, revealing that localization is not transplant but a triple-dimensional creative transformation of language, body and space. The conclusion posits three core lessons for foreign drama to thrive in China: anchor issues in local social realities, build high-caliber translation-adaptation teams, and conserve the original’s popular appeal and comic ethics. Conversely, it offers Chinese theatre a feasible route outward: to globalize “Chinese stories” through lived texture and cross-cultural dialogue.
